Scenic Route

This project is a racing track, made with Unreal's default vehicle blueprint, the landscape spline tool and free assets from the epic game's store for set dressing. It was a student project, made over 4 days

Direction

I decided to go for a more realistic approach when designing the track. To achieve that, I looked at many references of roads and racing circuits. My primary reference for the setting were segments of the Pacific Coast Highway or California's State Route 1. I used that road as a setting for a few reasons, first I wanted to have dangerous exciting parts with high intensity in my level, so I incorporated a cliff side part with some hard turns to make them fell more dangerous, I also observed that the Pacific Coast Highway had a lot of flora in the side opposite to the ocean, so I used that side to give the player some less intense parts, for them to breathe.

Design

When creating the layout itself, I used as reference both Formula 1 circuits as well as racing games levels. The Formula 1 references were really good when thinking of the overall shape of the level, and the game references worked well for planning out the gameplay beats and the overall intensity of the level, I also observed in games how the information is given to the player, for instance how they approach creating curves and how they let the player know there is on coming. In the end, my biggest inspiration when creating the layout was the Formula 1, Monaco's Circuit. I used that circuit as my primary reference because it had a similar setting to my map, being a circuit near the ocean with cliff-side parts, the biggest difference is that  though is that the Monaco Circuit is set in the middle of the city, while mine is in the middle of a road.

Once I had the track whiteboxed, I started placing props, starting by my landmarks. I have 3 landmarks that serve a very specific purpose, one of the is used to make players recognize when there at the end of the track, the other two are place the far corners of the map so the map can have a sense of direction.
